We would be hundreds of chickens short, and dozens of lambs killed if it wasn’t for our livestock guardian dogs. Coyotes, foxes, bear, wildcats, coons, owls, eagles and MORE are successfully warded off by livestock guardian dogs. We are delighted to have wild animals exist on our farm, and our dogs establish a firm boundary so everyone can live in harmony.

Livestock guardian dogs aren’t out for the kill. They simply use their size and their voice to get the job done. They can often be heard barking in the night (not constant, but sometimes fairly often, depending on the predator pressure).

ABOUT OUR BREED: Caddie is a purebred Maremma, and Ranger is a blend of Maremma, Polish Tatra, Spanish Mastiff, and Central Asian Shepherd.

WHY OUR BREED: Maremmas are known to be close guarding, meaning they don’t wander. Ranger stays with the sheep 100% of the time (throughout the farm during the grazing months), and Caddie is free to watch over the barnyard. She sleeps in the barn at night (by her choice). We never have to lock up the chickens at night, because she lays by their roosts, and does regular rounds by the turkeys and meat chickens during the summer months. Caddie will follow us around the farm, but only if we go, and otherwise is content to stay by her animal pals in the barnyard.
